Josefa (Unknown) Picadizo

She would always tell us that she was born on the eve of Jose Rizals death (around December 30, 1896).

She married but had no children. her husband died early. she had a tatoo. three letters. i forgot now what they were exactly. She had 2 siblings. Maria and Evaristo.

She was illiterate, save for the alphabet. She knew some prayers in Spanish. She didnt go to school like children did, because it was customary at that time to not send women. Her parents thought of just marrying her off.

During the second world war. Towards the end. She hid in cavite then migrated back to manila. details are vague. she stood as guardian to rosalinda and her family. esp when felipa, mother to rosalinda, died during the war. and then later, she babysitted rosalinda's children. walking them off to the local schools at zafaro street.

I remember she would tell stories repeatedly of the war. of the americans and the japanese. but i was so young then i didnt bother to write then down. whenever i was sick, she would make me lay my head on her lap and then she would massage it. she used a special kind of oil. whenever i smell that oil (efficacent oil). i think about her. coming home from school, she would ask us for money. and the coins kept piling up underneath her bed until one day. in the 1990s she was sent away. for no apparent reason. i came home and she was gone. i wasnt able to say goodbye even. months later, she died in her sleep with her relatives in binangonan rizal. it was new years eve. everyone was celebrating except me. I was in my room. crying. I miss her so much ..

Felipa Picadizo Paredes - Sales

Born in May 26, 19xx. Died on August xx, 1946. Felipa was a teacher. She taught young children. She was also, a librarian at the american navy yard in manila.

She and her sister, Natividad, studied at the manila north highschool. A highschool diploma was enough to land a good job as a teacher at that time.

She married Cenon Guitierrez Sales. She had two children. Rosalinda and Cenon ll. And adopted Cenon's children from his first wife, Romeo and Cenon Jr.

In august 8, 1946, when the americans infiltrated manila and the japanese were on a retreat at avenida rizal. the americans bombed the jockey club near sta cruz, manila. where there were stationed japanese. and nearby was malabon street were felipa and her family lived. during the bombings, a shrapnel fell on their house. one hit felipa on the head, instantly killing her. during her wake, she was wrapped in cloth and banig because coffins were not available. she was buried beside the house at malabon street.

Elsewhere, at the University of Sto Tomas, new of several americans were held prisoner.

Cenon Guitierrez Sales

born on december 22, 19xx.

Cenon loved gambling. frequenting the horse races and highalay?? During and after the second world war, he worked for the philippine national bank (PNB) where he gets a regular salary, a sack of rice, and a pail of bagoong. the japanese forces allowed it. this is how he and his family survived the war. he was working at PNB.

He was married 3 times. First to Virginia Pangilinan (and had Romeo and Cenon Jr), then to Felipa Paredes (and had Cenon ll and Rosalinda), and then finally to Carolina "Masosay" Lukban.

Sometimes, with the help of Rosita (the leche flan woman), Felipa would catch Cenon and his affairs at the movie theaters.

he slipped and hit his head off the stairs. he fell into a coma after a week. then he died.

Rosalinda Paredes Sales - Macapobre

in her generation, they were among the youngest which means by the time that this project began, most of her uncles and aunts are either dead or senile. there is little memory, stories about them are scarce.

rosalinda was part of a second family. cenon, her father, had a family prior to meeting felipa, her mother. she lived with her half brother - cenon jr, and her other sibling romeo and cenon ll. they all lived in a kind of chalet in malabon street. the land was rented but the house is theirs.

rosalinda has vague memories of her mother. one time, her mother would give her balot to fight her fevered convulsions. rosalinda remembers a trip to quiapo where (with felipa, her mother) would buy them. she doesnt remember her face, having died during the second world war. she was less than five years old.

rosalinda took grade school in francisco balagtas elementary school, in sta. cruz, manila. near her home at malabon street. she remembers having 10 cents for snack (baon). there werent much of anything then. it was the second world war. the whole country and manila was occupied by japan.

she took high school at arellano highschool. and her commerce degree at the philippine college of commerce (now known as the polytechnic university of the philippines).

roslinda worked for philippine national bank (PNB) - illigan office where she met her current husband. she got married on april 21, 1967 to romeo tejana macapobre. she worked for philippine national bank (PNB), the main office for several years. she worked in the states (au califronie) for a couple of months a year as caregiver. her first assignment was mrs queen who was a former miss america in the 1920s.
